Midweek Moodboard #37 (The Met Ball Special)

Hello and welcome to today’s midweek moodboard. Today I thought I’d mix things up a bit and bring you my absolute favourite dresses and looks from this year’s Met Ball. The Met Ball took place in NYC on Monday night and as usual it brought the who’s who of fashion out in force, in all their gorgeous gear. The exhibition being opened in true style, was Punk: Chaos to Couture, and more than a few fashionistas payed homage to the genre by going for studs, spikes, fishnet, tartan and everything inbetween.

I absolutely adore Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in fantasy show Game of Thrones. Her gorgeous red Ralph Lauren dress stood out against a sea of black, but she still went for a punky look with her sole cross earring. Sometimes the more simple the dress, the more impact it makes, and this was far more eye-catching than some of the more look-at-me ensembles.

This controversial Marc Jacobs look from Miley Cyrus has caused a split public opinion, but I think she pulled off this literal take on punk perfectly. The theme was punk, and she nailed it, on an evening where many celebs seemed to have missed the punk memo entirely. Top marks Miley, punk is all about rebellion and expression, so if the general public don’t like it, doesn’t that make it more apt?

Next up is Doutzen Kroes, who rarely puts a foot wrong. I love this black, quilted number, it does have a punky feel to it, though her look is less literal. Doutzen’s slicked back ‘do made sure all the attention went to that amazing dress. Proving that a black dress need not be boring, and a big dress need not be a meringue, Doutzen found the perfect balance in Theysken’s Theory.

The first of Burberry’s Met Ball accomplishments now, with Sienna Miller in an apt spiked jacket and minimal gown. This look certainly turned heads and has been widely regarded as one of the best looks of the entire night. Sienna rocked this look with ease, and the thrown-together style of this really matched up with the carefree, fun attitude she seemed to have on show all evening.

Oh Balmain, how I love you. Kate Bosworth looked incredible in this bright pink and gold ensemble, despite some criticising it for not being punk enough. Kate played down this in-your-face frock by going for simple shoes, a black clutch and loose waves which made it feel much more ‘Kate Wearing Balmain’ rather than the other way around.

The next look comes from Sky Ferreira, whose grungy style I adore anyway. Sky rocked up in this glitzy Saint Laurent Paris mini dress and black accessories, working a little bit of a punky vibe with her could-care-less hairdo and dark, smudgy make up. This look is uncompromising and totally Sky, she’s sticking to her personal style which I admire, rather than looking overdone.

I don’t know what I love more, Anne’s daring, gorgeous dress or her new bleached blonde ‘do. Working her post-Les Mis crop with punk attitude was certainly not what I was expecting, but I can’t get enough of it. Now, that dress! Anne went revealing and fearless in her Valentino frock, shedding her more demure style for something super striking, she even worked neon nails to boot.

A definitely less punk look was donned by Olivia Wilde, but I adored her minimalist frock nonetheless. The gorgeously-fitting custom Calvin Klein was sexy without being overly revealing, but showed off just enough skin to cause a stir. Anything remotely sci-fi inspired is an instant winner in my book, and this futuristic spin on a classic white dress does it for me.

Cementing her fashion credentials in Burberry, Cara stunned again in this spiked custom-made dress. Adorned with tonnes of accessories, seriously punky smudgy make up and a side-swept ‘do, there isn’t anything about this look that I don’t absolutely love. It seems this is one of the looks of the night that’s hitting best dressed lists everywhere.

Finally today is this look from fashion favourite Alexa Chung. Normally super-preppy, Alexa’s style has never really been my bag, but this Erdem look I can totally get behind. The sheer panels and unusual shape make for a more daring dress than I ever expected from Alexa. It may be all black, but I think this creation is absolutely beautiful and it’s always great to see someone step out of their usual style, if only for the night.

That’s it for this week’s moodboard, I hope you enjoyed the little rundown of my favourite dresses. Let me know what your favourite Met Ball look was by leaving me a comment below or tweeting me @MillieDelacoe. Until next time…
